Limerick Day 5 Review

 Limerick Review Final Day

Gaynor Cup Shield Place Match (17th/18th)

Longford 3

Limerick County 0

Limerick's last game of the tournament on Friday morning ended in a defeat at the hands of Longford.

It was the home side who controlled the opening stages creating three chances but couldn't make it count before the water break.

After the break Longford  gained a foothold before Aoife Creevy fired in to give her side the lead just on the stroke of half time.

It was all Longford after the break as they extended their advantage through Megan Magovern.

The tie finished when captain Mia Murtagh fired in her side's third goal of the day.

This meant the Limerick County team finished 18th overall in the tournament.

Gaynor Cup Shield Place Match 20/21

Donegal 1

Limerick Desmond 0

After a strong performance for the majority of the game a late Donegal goal was the difference between the sides.

The west Limerick side controlled the opening half with Elanor Blake causing damage every tie she drove down her wing. Blake created a number of chances but was thwarted by the Donegal rearguard.

After the first water break it was the Desmonds who kept pushing forward but some great defending led to the sides being level at the break.

It was much the same after the interval as Blake along with Katie O’ Goman created more chances but couldn't convert.

With seven minutes left in the tie and the game well in the balance Donegal’s Eva Diver drove down the wing before finishing into the back of the net giving her side the lead against the run of play.

Donegal held out for a real smash and grab victory.

Gaynor Cup Bowl Place Match 12th/ 13th

Limerick District 4

Kilkenny 5

What a game to finish off the Limerick sides involvement in the tournament as Kilkenny managed to hold off a spirited District effort to win this nine goal epic.

It was the Leinster side who started the  first half at a lightning pace. Their opening goal came six minutes in from Órla Sutton who finished well under pressure.

From the water break Kilkenny took complete control, firing  in three more goals in the half. It was Lucy Kelly who fired in two for her side along with another from Sutton at the end of the half.

After the interval Sutton finished off her hat trick. It looked like the tie was over until Eva Loftus grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck netting a hat trick for her side. Her partner in crime Madison McGuane fired in another for her side .

This amazing comeback was nearly completed but unfortunately the final whistle came just in time for Kilkenny.

For a side that are only together a few weeks, The District should be very proud of their performance in their first ever Gaynor Cup Tournament .

Special mention to Eva Loftus who also finished as joint top scorer in the whole competition.
