Gaynor Cup Final Day Review

Cup Final

Carlow 0

Midlands 0

Pens 6-5

In a closely contested final, penalties ultimately made the difference, with Cara English converting the deciding spot kick.

With Doyle and her midfield partner Anna Cullen controlling the middle of the ground, Carlow had the best of the initial exchanges. When an Eimear Bolger free kick missed the target after 10 minutes, Carlow had the first-half opportunities.  Leading scorer Ciara Milton had a free  kick just before the first water break, but her shot was brilliantly saved, and the rebound was also saved. This was the first significant opportunity of the half.

After the break, the game turned into a shootout as both teams began to feel more confident. A Siobhan Sinnott corner almost found its way into the Midlands  side's goal but hit the crossbar instead. Sinnott had the final opportunity for her team, but she was unable to put her side into the lead. The Midlands had the final opportunity of the half, but Carla Byrne stopped a long free shot.

Upon the  restart, it became obvious that this game might be won with just one goal. Milton led a second Carlow breakaway, but Slattery in the opposing goal cleared it to safety. Early in the half, Cara English and her defense held strong as the Midlands were unable to generate any noteworthy chances.

After the second water break, play resumed, and Milton came close to converting a free, but once again the bar got in the way. The defenders blocked Sinnott's attempt to score on a rebound. After a great run, Milton was given the final opportunity in regular time, but her shot narrowly missed the far post. extending the tie to a second period.

No one had the energy to make any progress toward either goal in the extra time after a difficult week for both teams.

Penalties would determine this final.

First up in the shootout was Sophie Bynre who finished well.  All penalties were emphatically put into the corner of the net.

After a Carla Bynre save up stepped Cara English who had a dead leg yesterday to put away the final penalty giving her side the victory.

What a game to finish off the Limerick sides involvement in the tournament as Kilkenny managed to hold off a spirited District effort to win this nine goal epic.
