Limerick Day 3 Review

THE action continues for Day 4 of the Gaynor Cup U14 interleague schoolgirl competition, which features three Limerick sides, today, Thursday at UL.

Limerick County are in Shield semi-final action at 5pm on Thursday at UL when facing the Roscommon League at 5pm.

Earlier in the day, competition newcomers Limerick District take on the Kildare League in a Bowl fixture at 11am, while Limerick Desmond are in action against the Kerry League at 1pm in a Shield play-off fixture.

Round-up of Wednesday's Gaynor Cup action:

Shield Quarter-Final

Limerick County 2, Donegal 1

A last minute penalty saw Limerick County  come from a goal down to beat a strong Donegal team in their Gaynor Cup Shield quarter-final at UL on Wednesday.

It was the visitors who had all the opening play. They started to control the middle of the park early and this led to them creating a number of half chances before the water break but the home side held them at bay.

After the water break Donegal broke the deadlock from a corner as the ball went in off B Ferry. This gave them a deserved lead at the interval.

After the break it was all Limerick District, led by the excellent Aoife Frawley, of Herbertstown, who scored a terrific individual goal early in the half.

Both sides battled for control after the second water break. It looked like the game was heading to penalties. This was until Frawley drove forward in the final minute winning a penalty.

The spot-kick was duly converted by vice captain Ellen Hackett, of Murroe.

Shield Quarter-Final

Limerick Desmond 0, Wexford 2

On the adjacent pitch it was the south east side who were victorious, despite a valiant Limerick Desmond effort in their Shield quarter-final on Wednesday.

It was the home side who threatened the goals early on but couldn't make the pivotal breakthrough. After the break, Wexford gained control and took the lead when Kate Tomkins collected a through ball before finishing expertly.

Minutes later the lead was doubled when N White struck an effort into the goal. Desmond carved out the last chance of the

half but it was well kept out by the opposition net minder.

The second half was a much more tense affair as Wexford held firm at the back. The west Limerick side carved out the last two chances in the game but unfortunately couldn't make either of them count.

Bowl Quarter-Final

Limerick District 2 South Tipperary 4

The tea time kick-off on Wednesday saw near neighbors Tipp win in a six goal thriller against Limerick District.

This game ebbed and flowed from the opening minutes with both sides creating chances early on. The better of these fell to the home side but they were well kept out.

With half-time looming the game burst into life when Eva Loftus, of Aisling Annacotty, found herself in the perfect position to give her side the lead with a neat finish.

In the next attack, the game was level, however, when C Fitzgerald's volley flew into the roof of the net.

After the break South Tipperary started to gain control of this tie with M Quinn netting before Fitzgerald doubled her tally for the day.

With ten minutes left Limerick pushed forward and narrowed the gap through an own goal. As the home side pushed forward, South Tipp finished the game off when midfielder R Kelly scored from outside the box to make sure of the victory.
