Gaynor Cup Review Day 1

Monday the 5th of June saw the opening round of this year’s Gaynor Cup take place in Limerick. History was made with three different teams from the home county being represented for the first time ever.

With seven groups in the competition fixtures were taking place at 4 o’ clock and again at 6 allowing people to attended more than one game.

Group 1

This group looks like its going to be one of the tougher ones after day one. First up it was Midlands vs Kilkenny. It was the midland side that took the spoils in this tie with a goal in either half from N Trainor and C Brett.

The second game was a much tighter affair between two Ulster sides as Donegal and Cavan/ Monaghan shared the spoils in was a tough encounter . Donegal’s goals came from E Nelis and S Doherty. While the opposition goals came from K Burns Sullivan and M Treanor in injury to time to level the tie after E Bateson had been sent off the Cavan / Monaghan.

Group 2

It looks highly unlikely that anyone is going to beat Galway in this groups after they fired twelve goals passed Inishowen with K Barrett netting a hat trick for his side.

The other tie saw North Tipperary over come one of the three Limerick sides by four goals meaning both sides that won will have a big goal difference going into the next two rounds tomorrow.

Group 3

Its two teams from the southeast corner of the country that top this group after the opening round of games.

Wexford overcame Mayo by three goals with N White and R Murdiff firing in two goals in the opening half before E. Goggin ensured victory for her side.

The other game in the saw Carlow overcome the Limerick district side in a six goal thriller . It was the C Milton show for Carlow as her hat trick kept Limerick at bay during the making sure of victory for her side.

Group 4

The opening game in this groups was an all Munster affair between Waterford and the Limerick County side. It was the visitors who took the win in this tie with goals two goals from L Roche either side of half time along with H Kirby and an unfortunate own goal.

The other game in the was another slightly one sided affair as NECSL put five goals past Clare with striker  L Burke firing in two great efforts for her side.

Group 5

This group looks like it could be two Connacht sides that will come out on top.

Sligo Leitrim managed to put four goals past Kildare in the opening game in the group.. It was the A Hannigan Gray show  as she netted either side of the half time whistle along with two other goals make sure her side topped the group after the opening day.

The other Connacht side in the groups overcame Kerry by two goals as centre back E Diskin managed to find the net twice in the tie to clinch victory for her side.

Group 6

A hat trick from R Loughran saw the Dublin side overcome a valiant effort from the south Tipperary girls in this opening round tie.

Group 7

It was the North Dublin side who triumphed against another Munster team this time Cork. An early goal within twelve minutes set the tone with C O’ Donohue netting before C Smith made sure of the victory with the final play of the game.
