Review of Quarter final day.

 

Gaynor Cup

Cup Quarter finals.

Sligo- Leitrim

MGL North

The much anticipated tie between Sligo who hadn’t let in a goal yet against the competition top scorers.

It was Sligo striker A Gray Hannigan who started the scoring inside the first ten minutes. Unfortunately just after half time the tie had to be postponed due to an unfortunate injury to one of the players.

NECSL 2

MGL South 2.

It was the Dublin side who managed to win this tie on penalties after the sides couldn’t be separated in normal time.

The Dubs started the tie strong with an early goal from R Loughran. Even though they were in control NECSL never gave up hope and eventually levelled the tie through H Twomey.

It was Loughran again who put her side into the lead again before Twomey levelled the tie for a second time in this end to end game.

The dreaded penalty shootout began it was E Ivers who stood up for MGL to put her side through to the Cup semi-final winning 5-4 on penalties.

 

 

 

Quarter Final 3

Galway 1

Carlow and District. 1

The first half of this tie was a typical cup tie with both sides battling for early control. Neither side could get make any major inroads into the opposition defence.

The deadlock was eventually broken by Galway with a wonderful strike from A Duffy. Not to be outdone Carlow pushed up the other end and within three minutes they had levelled the tie through S Sinnott.

It was Carlow who the tie when C English stepped up to send her side into the final winning 4-3 on penalties.

 

Bowl QF

Cork 1

Kilkenny 0

The Munster side secured their place  in the bowl semi final winning by a solitary goal against sporting rivals Kilkenny.

Cork started the game with a lot of possession in the middle of the park but Kilkenny stood strong any time that Cork made inroads into their final third.

The first half finished honours even as nobody could trouble the goals.

The southern side finally broke the deadlock after a sustained period of possession. The ball landed at the feet of S Redmond after great play from B Manley . This Redmond goal was the difference between the sides at the final whistle.

 

 

 

 

North Tipperary 1

Kildare DUL 0

The day belonged to the Munster side as a second half goal was enough for them to beat Kildare.

The first half was touch and go in terms of breaking the deadlock as both sides pushed forward as much as they could . Both goalkeepers stood strong making sure the sides were level at the break.

After the whistle NT started to take control of the game as they battled hard in the middle third. In the early stages of the second half M O’ Shea collected a ball before feeding S Maxwell.to fire into the net.

 

South Tipperary 4

Limerick District 2

What a tie this was between the two Munster rivals.

The home side flew out of the blocks scoring early through Eva Loftus early in the half. With 4 minutes to go until  the break the tie was levelled through an exquisite volley from C Fitzgerald

The second half became a goal fest as ST doubled there lead as M Quinn and then Fitzgerald fired home a third. The home side pushed forward and got a deserving second goal as ST put in into there own net. In the last play of the game R Kelly buried a shot into the top of the net worthy to win any cup game.

 

Shield Quarter Finals

Donegal 1

Limerick County 2

 

After a strong first half from Donegal it was the home side made it count as there second half performance ensure they would make it through to semi finals.

It was the Ulster side who pushed forward from and this resulted in a great goal from B Ferry ably assisted by S Doherty . They kept the pressure on until the end of the half but couldn’t extend their lead.

After the break A Frawley  broke from the middle of the park and after a fantastic run she levelled the tie expertly . With penalties looking likely up stepped Frawley who was fouled in the box. In the final play of the game E Hackett stepped forward to calmly put her side in the semi-finals under severe pressure.

Longford 2

Louth 2

 

Another one of the many ties that went to penalties it was Longford who were victorious on a 4-3 score line.

Both sides produced some fantastic football in an epic battle. Every ball was hotly contested.

It was M Murtagh who stepped up to give Longford the lead early in the first half.  The first half continued with chances from both sides bt no one could change the score line .

Minutes into the second half Louth levelled the tie through S Levins. In the final ten minutes of the tie both sides managed to score again. Murtagh grabbed her second before four minutes into injury time C Mota sent the game to penalties.

It was S Molloghan who stepped forward for Longford expertly finshing her penalty to ensure her sides place in the next round.

 

Limerick Desmond 0

Wexford 2

The southeast side produced a fantastic display of football winning out by two gaols.

The first half began to the purple and gold as K Tomkins broke through to finish neatly before on the stroke of half time N White doubled the lead.

The second half was produced some great defending from Wexford as the Desmond’s pushed forward to get back into the tie. They never managed to score no matter how much they tried.

Trophy QF

 Kerry 0

Clare 0

This all Munster affair ended up in penalties as neither side could trouble the net during normal time.

A first half that was end to end that didn’t produce any major opportunities as both defences stood strong.

Early in the second half Kerry managed to manufacture a penalty. Up stepped the goalkeeper but her effort was kept out.

Resulting in a penalty shootout. Up stepped K Monahan to fire in the decisive penalty for Clare giving them a 4-2 victory.
