Arklow Geralndines Ballymoney 3-4

ST Pats Wicklow  0-8

Pearses Park Arklow

Eoin Horkan

Last Tuesday night in arklow the first round of the ladies senior football championship was played. The great conditions made for a great match between two teams. Two very young teams playing nice brands of football

St Pats started the game faster pace with corner forward Niamh o Brien  scoring an early point  from play before putting another from a free. The Geraldine’s then went on their first meaningful attack and after a great bit of interplay the ball ended up in the back of the net but before we could chalk it down as a goal the refs whistle had blown for a penalty. Up stepped AGB’s corner forward who had just recently transferred to the club from Kerry. She stuck  the penalty  high into the roof of the Wicklow net. Wicklow forwards started showing for the ball with o Brien getting another point from play before centre  forward Laura Manley scored another from play. Wicklow seemed to be working that bit harder to get there scores. Anytime the ball went into the AGB full forward line of Cunningham and full forward Aine o Reily they seemed capable of causing havoc inside. With Cunningham scoring another point after some good work by o Reilly .Wicklow started to get there forwards scoring again with o Brien at corner forward been especially dangerous scoring two more points from play before full forward Sinead mcgettigan got another point from play. As the half time whistle was about to blow AGB went on one last attack and after some fine interplay centre forward Jessie Mcelheran slotting the ball into the back of the Wicklow net.

Whatever was said at half time to AGB it definitely worked. AGB came out firing on all cylinders. The AGB started to come out on top with great displays. With the backs performing so well it gave the forwards a better platform to get scores . The scoring started with mcelheran getting on the end of a fine flowing move to put the ball into the net. The next few minutes then went two and frow with both defences then coming out on top before AGB midfielder Niamh Arthur made a lung bursting run up the field to slot over another point . Then AGB forward Cunningham got a yellow card for an off the ball incident. Wicklow started to pile on the pressure while Cunningham was on the sideline but Wickow couldn’t break down the rear guard and when they did there forwards were wasteful.
AGB then started to empty with sub Georgina Canavan making an immediate impact after coming off the bench and scoring a point from  play . With Cunningham back on the pitch AGB looked more dangerous with o reily and Cunningham causing damage any time the bell got near them with Cunningham slotting AGBs last point of the game. The Arklow defence fought valiantly right till the end went St pats only getting a late consolation score  from centre back Niamh MCettigan.
