On Thursday morning Wicklow produced a great display from start to finish but finished with a share of the spoils with a last-minute free kick from their Cork opponents. Tyler McElvaney had his side in the lead, but the Atlantic wind helped the Cork side net a late free kick.

Wicklow 3

Clare Yellow 0

In what was arguably one of the best performances of the tournament Wicklow dominated from start to finish to get all three points against Clare.

It was Rian Abell Ward who opened the scoring before Alessio Coppola and Kevin Yan who ensured the three points.

Wicklow 2

Salthill Devon 1

The final group game ended up being a semifinal as Wicklow made their way into the Saturdays final.

An angled effort from Kevin Yan with the advantage of the breeze gave his side the lead early. After the break the home side leveled before Alessio Coppola stopped up to fire in a magnificent free kick to send his side into the final

Final

Wicklow 2 (0)

 Finn Harps 2 (3)

After a two-goal draw at full time with goals coming from Tyler McEvaney, the sides couldn’t be separated at full time.

It was Wicklow that dominated this game with McAvaney firing in two early goals. With four minutes to go the northern side managed to narrow the gap to one before firing in an equalizer in the last minute of play.

Afterwards we got the thoughts of U12 coach Andrew McDonough. “How after getting to the final was icing on the cake. “The boys started fantastically.”  McDonough goes on to praise Finn Harps on how “they played football till the end and unfortunately the little bit of luck needed to win cup finals was on their side at the end of the tournament.”

As a final word Andrew explains how the tournament went as a whole and how he was so porous of the boys getting too two finals in the SFAI the Galway Cup

“The squad had enough about them to get to a final. He adds “how the lads progressed throughout the tournament.”

Wicklow U13s roundup

Wicklow 3

Limerick County 2

The U13s got their first win of the tournament in a five-goal thriller. It was Rhys Behan who opened his tally for the tournament before Cian Murphy and David McCormac ensured all three points.

Wicklow 3

Longford 2

In their final group game, a Cian Murphy hat trick was the difference as they got revenge on Longford after the same team had beaten them in the All-Ireland final in June.

Semi Final

Wicklow 2

Carlow 1

Wicklow’s U13s made their way into the final with a win over the southeast neighbors. Cian Murphy doubled either side of the half time whistle was rough to see his side into the final on Saturday against the Finn Harps academy.

Limerick County 1(4)

For the second time in the tournament Wicklow’s U13s managed to come out on top against Limerick County.

The southeast side dominated from the opening whistle and deservedly took the lead with a Samuel Conyard penalty. They had several chances to extend their lead but couldn't do it. Playing against the elements in the second half Wicklow were pegged back and eventually Limerick leveled the tie.

The managers had a huge decision to make in the final plays as penalties loomed. They had given each keeper a half during the competition, and it was Lucy Doyle Farrington  who had to mind the nets for her side in the penalties. She managed to guess right for all five penalties. After Limerick’s first one went wide Wicklow penalty takers Sam Conyard, Rhys Behan, Cillian Maher, David McCormac and Cian Murphy kept their composure to win bringing home a cup from Galway for the first time ever.

Lucy Doyle Farrington gives her thoughts after the game. “I was pumped going into the penalty shootout and I believed that we would win it as we had such great support on the sideline.”  Lucy, who guessed right for every penalty, explains how “she was immensely proud of all the work the coaches had put in before and during the tournament and how this led them to believe that they would come home with the silverware.” After the final whistle assistant manager Trevor Conyard states how “during the whole tournament the side had never been behind, and it stayed like this all the way through with a strong defense and two great goalkeepers.”

It was a tough start for last year's Kennedy cup side as they were put in the toughest group possible.

Salthill Devon 1

Wicklow 1

In what was a great presence Wicklow battled to earn a point against the home side. Jack Healy opened his tally for the tournament.

One the third day of competition the Wicklow side kept playing.

Some lovely football but were unfortunately beaten by two which was a great result against a midlands side. They played against another Galway side in Maree Oranmore who got the better of them in a tough tie by four which did not reflect how close the tie was.

It was a midday kick off for the first Wicklow Limerick tie of the day.

Like came out victorious by 4 goals.

It was a 10th place finish for Wicklow.

And finally, Brian along with Galway Cup coordinator Ronan Gibney wanted to state, “how the Wicklow sides had the best support during the four days of competition and how all the other teams spoke highly of them.”
