Intermediate Football championship
A late Gearoid Murphy point was enough to see
both sides go home with a point from Roundwood Sunday evening.
It was the side wearing green and gold who
gained an early advantage in this tie firing over three early scores from the
forward trio of Ronan Brennan, Martin O'Brien and Conor Byrne. The west Wicklow
sided with a dead ball from Jack Slattery to narrow the gap. It was then the
turn of Annacurra cornerback Euan Harper to slot over before another Slattery
free. Near the midway point of the first half Annacurra looked like they had
taken complete control with a major of the boot of Dylan Doyle before Byrne
added a second to his tally. Just after the midway point as it looked like the
opposition were out of the game up stepped Declan Cahill and Jack Slattery to
raise two green flags one after another while Wayne Comerford added a minor.
With the last plays of the half Byrne slotted his third before center back
Glenn Austin ensured that Annacurra would be a point up at the break.
After the interval Valleymount moved Sean
Higgins inside and within minutes he levelled the tie before play before slotting
in a forty-five to give his side the lead. A dead ball from Robbie Miley saw
the west Wicklow side push ahead by two points. Moments later, after Stephen
Murphy split the posts from long range, he was then giving his marching orders
for a strike on one of his opponents. It looked like this had put the reds in
complete control as Higgins along with substitute Sean Geoghan added two more scores.
With ten minutes to go Geraroid Murphy sprung from the bench for the south
Wicklow side and within minutes he had narrowed the gap to one. With the final
kick of the game Murphy slotted over an effort with four defenders around him
to ensure that both sides would leave with a point.
