After a good early start from the south
Wicklow side, it was Barndarrig that eventually came out on top on Saturday
evening in Rathdrum.
Playing with the aid of a strong breeze it was
Coolkenno who flew out of the blocks going three points ahead inside ten
minutes. After keeping possession well, they eventually broke through with an
effort from Conor Walker in the next play, Cathall Rossiter was given a black card.
Within minutes wing forward Pauric Murray had fired over two long range frees.
Midway through the half Barndarrig started to fight back led by full forward
Michael Murphy slotting a mark before Martin Cullen and Paul Ryan leveled the
tie. With the final kick of the half Eamon Rossiter stepped up to fire over
with the aid of the breeze, ensuring his side would be up by the minimum at the
break.
When the game resumed Barndarrig fought back
and took a two-point lead with efforts from Martin Cullen and Murphy again
along with a Michael Cullen effort. The dead balls of Murray had the tie level
as we reached the midway point of the game. With the tie firmly in the balance,
Murphy stepped up again to give his side the lead before doubling the lead
minutes later. With only a kick of the ball between the sides Barndarrig
goalkeeper Aaron Jackson pulled off a great save. On the counterattack Martin Cullen
finished the scoring for his side. With Coolkenno looking for that decisive
goal all they could manage was a final free from Rossiter leaving two points
between the sides at the final whistle.
