Junior Camogie Championship
Avoca 4-4
Carnew 4-2
Eoin Horkan
Avoca ( Rooster Park)
Avoca used home advantage to
ensure a win in their first women’s senior camogie game since 2015.
It was the home side that
troubled the scoreboard first when Elizabeth Fahy’s long range strike found the
back of the net inside five minutes. Within minutes Carnew narrowed the gap
with a dead ball from Tara Doran . Avoca’s defence were holding out strong most
notably goalie Claire Fleming who stopped a number of goal bound efforts. Just
after the midpoint Fahy raised a white flag from play before grabbing a second
from a free. The ever dangerous Doran in midfield for Carnew gathered the ball
and raised a green flag on the stroke of
half time leaving the minimum between the sides at the break.
From the beginning of the
second period it was clear that points from play were going to be tough to come
by. The home side manged to point first with
a fantastic long range free from Lisa Marie Doyle before Doran cancelled it out moments
later. As the half dragged defences were still on top until with ten minutes
gone Shauna Dickenson stepped up to bury a goal from her side. Within minutes
Dickenson had added a second goal to her tally after collecting a dropping ball
before firing high into the net. After this quick fire flurry it looked like
Avoca were on the way for a win but the Carnew girls had other ideas. It was Doran again who found the back of the net for a second time. With eight minutes
left up stepped Aoife Wafer who found the back of the net. The home pushed
forward through Fahy with one final free and a goal from Doyle from long range.
A final Aoife Wafer goal wasn’t enough as Avoca held on for what was a
well-deserved victory at home.
