 Arklow Rocks Parnells 0-7

A John Doyle inspired Carnew saw them get the win they needed in Arklow on Saturday evening.

It was the hometown side who opened the scoring with a quick fire double when PJ O’ Connor slotted a free before Shane Mellon added a second score inside five minutes. The opposition took the lead when Richard Greene fired in the goal before John Doyle opened his account with a free. As the rain came down in Arklow scores were hard to come by early on but O’ Connor kept his side in the game with three dead balls. Carnew response was efforts from play from late change John Gregan and Dan Nolan along with another Doyle dead ball. It was now the south Wicklow sides turn to take over with four more white flags from Doyle from play and frees. Both sides traded scores on the cusp of the final whistle with Larry Kinsella adding a second green flag. The Rocks finished the scoring in the half with another Mellon effort to narrow the gap to seven at the break.

Whatever was said to the Carnew men at the break certainly worked as they pushed forward early in the second half. It was that man Doyle who was on fire in the middle of the park as he added four more white flags with two from play while adding two more dead balls. The Arklow men narrowed the gap slightly with another free from O’ Connor. As the midway point of the half came Dan Nolan added two more to his tally as the gap between the sides widened.

From the midway point to the full-time whistle, it was all the Emmets firing a goal and five points without reply. After netting an early goal Kinsella added a white flag to his tally for the game. With ten minutes to go Doyle extended his account with three frees and an effort from play. With five minutes to go the opposition were reduced to fourteen men when Liam Somers saw the line with his second yellow of the game. The final scores of the game were a Doyle dead ball along with a third goal as Aaron Remond finished the scoring in Arklow.

An exceptional performance from start to finish saw Roundwood get the better of their neighbors away on Thursday night.

The opening half quarter of this tie belonged to the Roundwood full forward line as they all got on the scores sheet. It was the David Kavanagh show early on as the corner forward netted two early goals along with raising two white flags inside the opening ten minutes. The lead was extended when Dale Brady in the posit corner raised another white flag. Nearing the midway point, the home side were reduced to fourteen men when their goalie Ciaran McGurl was given a black card. The opposition pressed forward with the extra man as Niall Gaffney opened his account with two efforts before wing forwards Enda Foley and Kevin Lynchehaum extended the lead. The home side finally managed to open their account with a free from Sean Odlum.

With ten minutes left in the half another Kavanagh effort along with a Gaffney dead ball was canceled out when Sean Heffernan scored for the opposition. The final scores of the half were from the boots of Martin Gaffney and wingback Bobby Doyle as both drove up the field just before the half time whistle.

The home side were the first to trouble the scoreboard in the second half as Odlum added his second before cornerback Michael Kelly drove forward to narrow the gap. Roundwood was using the long ball into full forward Gaffney, and this paid off as he fired over three more efforts from play in between an Odlum effort from a free kick. Midway through the half Gaffney netted another goal as Brady did likewise minutes later. The opponent’s final consolation score of the game was an excellent point from an acute angle as Terry Murphy slotted over. It was then a Gaffney dead ball and a final goal from Kavanagh that guaranteed a win for Roundwood in this local derby.

An Andrew Kavanagh inspired Barndarrig saw them get the better of their neighbors Arklow on Tuesday night in the Junior championship.

From the opening whistle it was the village side that took control with Andrew Kavanagh four early scores from dead balls and efforts from play. His teammate Tom Doyle then extended the advantage before Kavanagh slotted in two more efforts. Midway through the half the home side's full back Kevin O’ Reilly was given his marching orders with Kavanagh adding another with the resulting free. Down to fourteen men Arklow started to play with Jason Redmond raising white flag from play and a free in between efforts from county star Kavanagh and James Cullen. On the stroke of half time Redmond raised a green flag from a twenty-one-yard free to narrow the gap to five.

After the interval, the Rocks started narrowing the gap with a glorious effort from Redmond before Cormac Whitmore added a long range free. The opposition added to their tally inside ten minutes with another Kavanagh dead ball. It was now the turn of Whitmore to take control as he put three more white flags on the scoreboard as the gap narrowed midway through the half. Not to be out done Malachy Stone and a Kavanagh double canceled out the scoring. Both Whitmore and Kavanagh traded two frees as the final whistle grew closer. With eight minutes left on the clock Jacques McCall, who played as the sweeper got his name to the scoresheet first from play. After a bit of confusion on the sideline Kavanagh was given his second yellow of the game. After having drawn last week Annacurra needed to win this third-round tie and this they did with the aid of Frank Clune and Gearoid Murphy, who did not start last week's tie.

After winning the toss Annacurra managed to open the scoring with a Ronan Brenna effort that split the posts. Within a minute the opposition had the tie level when Eric Olohan found his range from the edge of the exclusion zone. Both forward lines inside lines were looking dangerous as James Doyle fired over to give the south Wicklow side the advantage once again. The opposition then hit a purple patch with four scores in between a Frank Clune effort. The full forward line all got on the score sheet with Andrew Nolan firing over a place ball and Mark Cullen slotting over alongside an effort from Olohan to double his tally. The final score of this flurry for Laragh saw John Nolan open his account for the day. As the midway point of the half drew closer a Gearoid Murphy effort along with Euan Harper finding his range had leveled the contest. From midway to the end of the half it was all the side in green and gold as Murphy slatted two efforts, before Clune and Glenn Austin got in on the act. With the final kick of the half the gap had narrowed to three when Andrew Brancanto hit a forty-five.

When the contest resumed Clune extended the gap with two dead balls as it looked like Laragh were in trouble. This was not the case as they managed to narrow the gap considerably with midfielder Damien Hanlon raising a white flag alongside Cullen and Nolan before John Murphy got his name on the scoresheet. It was Clune who stepped up again to stem the time this time with an effort from play. The final scores of the game for Annacurra came from that man Clue adding two more before substitute Kevin Healy made an immediate impact. The opposition were going for goals as the tie entered the final minutes, but Annacurra held strong as John and Andrew Nolan fired over efforts. Laragh could not manage to break through the defense to score that all important goal as the opposition held out for a three-point victory.

After a good early start from the south Wicklow side, it was Barndarrig that eventually came out on top on Saturday evening in Rathdrum.

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze it was Coolkenno who flew out of the blocks going three points ahead inside ten minutes. After keeping possession well, they eventually broke through with an effort from Conor Walker in the next play, Cathall Rossiter was given a black card. Within minutes wing forward Pauric Murray had fired over two long range frees. Midway through the half Barndarrig started to fight back led by full forward Michael Murphy slotting a mark before Martin Cullen and Paul Ryan leveled the tie. With the final kick of the half Eamon Rossiter stepped up to fire over with the aid of the breeze, ensuring his side would be up by the minimum at the break.

When the game resumed Barndarrig fought back and took a two-point lead with efforts from Martin Cullen and Murphy again along with a Michael Cullen effort. The dead balls of Murray had the tie level as we reached the midway point of the game. With the tie firmly in the balance, Murphy stepped up again to give his side the lead before doubling the lead minutes later. With only a kick of the ball between the sides Barndarrig goalkeeper Aaron Jackson pulled off a great save. On the counterattack Martin Cullen finished the scoring for his side. With Coolkenno looking for that decisive goal all they could manage was a final free from Rossiter leaving two points between the sides at the final whistle.

A last-minute point from Sean Mescall who had flown back from Prague three hours earlier saw Blessington come out on top in this third-round game in the middle of Storm Betty.

In the opening phases of this game both sets of players had to try to cage that swirling wing from the storm. The opening score of the game from Jordan Nolan with a dead ball effort for the Blesso. Within five minutes the opposition had taken the lead with a minor from Brendan Behan before they fired in their first goal of the game through Dan Behan. The west Wicklow side were playing with the breeze and found points easier to come by with Sean Mescall and Curtis Geraghty firing over. With points difficult to come by their opponents netted a second goal this time as Dean Grandy found the roof of the net. Then the south Wicklow side were then reduced to fourteen men when Enda Foley was given his marching orders with six to go in the half. A penalty was awarded that Mikey O’ Toole duly converted.  A last free from Nola and another Geraghty effort n finished the scoring for the side in blue and white. The opposition netted a third goal of the half when Conor Clinton gave his side the lead by the minimum at the break.

When the game resumed the tie was leveled when Finn Behan raised a white flag with a sublime effort. A double from Wayne Kinsella gave his side the lead with eight minutes gone in the half. The scores were flying over from both sides as Barry Murphy and Nolan brough the lead back for their side. Shillelagh/ Coolboy then hit a purple patch firing over four scores unanswered. The first came from the boot of PJ O’ Keefe before Clinton and Behan extended their tally. The final score of this patch came from Pj Mulhall as it looked like the victory was going to the south Wicklow side. With eight minutes left in the tie the opponents hit into gear with frees coming from Nolan before O’ Toole added to his tally. The game then swung in their favor when O’ Toole collected a ball and fired into the net.  As the final whistle drew closer, cornerback Ethan Cotter drove up the field to raise a white flag which gave his side the lead. A dead ball out on the wing from Cathal Murphy had looked like both sides were going to be going home with a point each. Blessington’s wing forward Sean Mescall had other ideas as he drove forward to fire over the last score of the game giving his side the victory.

The home side produced a fine team display as they controlled this Junior B encounter from start to finish.

The home side had a clear game plan with full forward Thomas David pivotal to this as by the twentieth minute of this game the ex-Kildare underage star had fired over six points equally scoring from play and frees. It was then the turn of midfielder Adam Byrne to drive through the middle of the opposition defense before firing into the roof of the net. The opposition managed to stem the tide towards the end of the half with points from Shane Carty and Tadhg Reid. The final score of the half was from Daire Wright giving his side a comfortable lead at the half time whistle.

When the game resumed Davis slotted his final score before his other forrad colleagues joined in the scoring act. It was Mossy Lawlor who added a score to his tally alongside Dean O’ Rourke and a second goal this time from the aforementioned Wright before he doubled his points tally. A final effort from Kilbride stemmed the tide as Richard Ward got his name on the scoresheet. After the midway point Kilbride were awarded a penalty but Shane Carty's effort was well saved in the goal. As the home side emptied the bench one of the subs Dean Phelan made an immediate impact sliding in his side’s third goal of the game. A late Gearoid Murphy point was enough to see both sides go home with a point from Roundwood Sunday evening.

It was the side wearing green and gold who gained an early advantage in this tie firing over three early scores from the forward trio of Ronan Brennan, Martin O'Brien and Conor Byrne. The west Wicklow sided with a dead ball from Jack Slattery to narrow the gap. It was then the turn of Annacurra cornerback Euan Harper to slot over before another Slattery free. Near the midway point of the first half Annacurra looked like they had taken complete control with a major of the boot of Dylan Doyle before Byrne added a second to his tally. Just after the midway point as it looked like the opposition were out of the game up stepped Declan Cahill and Jack Slattery to raise two green flags one after another while Wayne Comerford added a minor. With the last plays of the half Byrne slotted his third before center back Glenn Austin ensured that Annacurra would be a point up at the break.

After the interval Valleymount moved Sean Higgins inside and within minutes he levelled the tie before play before slotting in a forty-five to give his side the lead. A dead ball from Robbie Miley saw the west Wicklow side push ahead by two points. Moments later, after Stephen Murphy split the posts from long range, he was then giving his marching orders for a strike on one of his opponents. It looked like this had put the reds in complete control as Higgins along with substitute Sean Geoghan added two more scores. With ten minutes to go Geraroid Murphy sprung from the bench for the south Wicklow side and within minutes he had narrowed the gap to one. With the final kick of the game Murphy slotted over an effort with four defenders around him to ensure that both sides would leave with a point.

In one of the highest scoring matches of the championship so far it was Donard who came out on top Sunday afternoon.

From the opening of the whistle, one could see this tie was going to   be a real scoring fest. The west Wicklow side took an early lead when Ray Halloran opened his account for the day. Within minutes the tie was level when opposition wing back Simo Doyle split the posts. Donard were playing a long ball into a two-man full forward Line of Halloran and Healy, this time it was Healy who fired over. The opponents then took the lead with a goal from Ben O’Callaghan added to with a point from Conor Gallagher. Both sides then traded scores with a dead ball from Liam Monaghan before Josh O’ Callaghan fired over from play. After the midway point in the half the west Wicklow side hit a purple patch hitting six points in between a solitary effort from their opponents. The Donard forward line was on fire as Halloran scored a goal before Ronan Flanagan along with wing forwards Conor Manifold and Kevin Keely all added white flags. Two more frees from Monaghan finished the scoring for their side with an effort in between from a dead ball off the boot of John Fox. Leaving four between the sides at the break.

After the resumption it was Donard who kept pushing forward with four more unanswered scores as Healy slotted two along with Manifold and another dead ball from Monaghan. With the game slipping away Kilmac started to plug away at the lead as Doyle added a goal to his tally from wing back along with a point from Fox as he was moved from midfield to full forward. After a goal line clearance by the Donard defense they countered and netted themselves through Manifold to extend the lead out again. As the final whistle drew nearer an Oisin o’ Friel effort canceled out two from the boot of Fox for the opposition. The fresh legs started to make an impact off the bench as with his first touch of the game Joey Mills found the back of the net. With five minutes to go the north Wicklow side drove forward and center back Gavan Burke unleashed an effort from the twenty-one-yard line which nestled in the corner of the net.  A second half Alex Kavanagh hat trick was the major difference between the sides on Saturday evening.

From the opening few minutes it was clear to see that both sides would find it difficult to score from play as the defenders seemed to be getting the better of their opponents.

The deadlock was finally broken after five minutes with an Adam Keegan effort for the home side.  As the half went on Bray pushed forward and took the lead with two dead balls off the boot of Niall McGraynor. It was then the turn of Conor Phelan to equalize for his side. Another McGraynor free gave his side the lead before Alex Kavanagh fired over his first point of the day leaving the sides level at the break.

After the interval Kavanagh doubled his account as he was starting to find his feet inside. Bray’s midfielder Adam Prunty was then shown the line for an off the ball incident early in the half. Both sides then landed frees with McGraynor and Phelan slotting over. The home side then hit a purple patch firing a goal and four points in an eight-minute spell with two minors from Conor Lambert and a Mick Brennan effort as he drove from midfield, Dean Newsone then found his range with a great effort. This was in between a goal from a penalty from Alex Kavanagh. A final McGraynor effort this time from play reduced the gap slightly before his teammate Evan Barry palmed into the net to ensure a nervy finish. This was until Kavanagh once again stepped up for his sides, netting twice in the final minutes of play to give his side a deserved victory.

After the final whistle the referee gave a second yellow to Conor Phelan as both sides left the field of play.

For the second time in the tournament Wicklow’s U13s managed to come out on top against Limerick County.

The southeast side dominated from the opening whistle and deservedly took the lead with a Samuel Conyard penalty. They had several chances to extend their lead but couldn't do it. Playing against the elements in the second half Wicklow were pegged back and eventually Limerick leveled the tie.

The managers had a huge decision to make in the final plays as penalties loomed. They had given each keeper a half during the competition, and it was Lucy Doyle Farrington  who had to mind the nets for her side in the penalties. She managed to guess right for all five penalties. After Limerick’s first one went wide Wicklow penalty takers Sam Conyard, Rhys Behan, Cillian Maher, David McCormac and Cian Murphy kept their composure to win bringing home a cup from Galway for the first time ever.

Lucy Doyle Farrington gives her thoughts after the game. “I was pumped going into the penalty shootout and I believed that we would win it as we had such great support on the sideline.”  Lucy, who guessed right for every penalty, explains how “she was immensely proud of all the work the coaches had put in before and during the tournament and how this led them to believe that they would come home with the silverware.” After the final whistle assistant manager Trevor Conyard states how “during the whole tournament the side had never been behind, and it stayed like this all the way through with a strong defense and two great goalkeepers.”
