Wicklow Junior A Championship

Barndarrig 2-8

Roundwood 1-6

Eoin Horkan

Avondale

As the saying goes goals win games this was certainly the case in Rathdrum last Friday

The opening couple of plays of the game were a sign of things to come with both sets of defences playing from the front from the word go. Eventually Roundwood opened the scoring through full forward Ger Byrne who won a hard ball out in front and swung the ball over the bar. Roundwood next score came through centre back Liam Gaffney who burst through the opposition defence to fire over the black spot from range.  Barndarrig responded in kind with three quick frees in succession through centre forward Michael Murphy. Scores were hard to come by in the opening half with both defences clearing ball any chance they got. This was proven when Roundwood wing back Gavin Fogarty drove out of the defence before he knew it he had fired a great score over the bar. Murphy added another free before Byrne split the posts yet again.  Barndarrig then started to pull away from their opposition with 3 scores the first from corner forward Jimmy Waldron before Murphy fired over from outside the D before Waldron added another from out near the sideline.  Fogarty burst up the field again to fire over his second of the game before corner forward Eamon Wolohan fired over the last score of the half leaving the minimum between the sides at the break.

The second half was a much tighter tenser affair with scores very much at a premium with defenders still been to the fore. Barndarrig then hit a sucker punch on the break with a ball been put in over the defence which resulted in a penalty which corner forward John Kinsella duly slotted into the corner of the net.  Waldron dissected the posts again to push the lead out for Barndarrig.  That man Fogarty was having a great game sweeping up any lose ball he then managed to get the ball near the half way line before slaloming and weaving his way through the defence and firing into the back of the net from just inside the 21 to make the game a contest again.  With the game in the melting pot the net score of the game proved to be the decisive one, with Barndarrig full forward Andrew Kavanagh finishing the game as a contest with a well taken goal.
