Parnell Park

On a miserable wet summer evening in Arklow, the junior B hurlers of Arklow managed to brave the conditions to get through to make their way into a Junior B semi final next Wednesday night.

The home side got off to a flying start hitting the opening two scores of the game, the first coming from evergreen full forward Danny Curran before Sean Pierce opened his account with a long range point.  Éire Óg responded in kind with a long range point of their own from full forward Aaron Toner.  Curran and Jason Redmond traded scored in the middle of the half Curran firing in a goal from inside the 21 before Redmond dissected the posts with a score from play. Curran hit the net again before Redmond fired over a dead ball. With the game running away from the away side they made their way back into it with a quick 1-2 the points  coming from play and a free from centre forward Pat Murphy before got a goal after firing the ball towards the posts from out near the sideline which eventually  ended up in the net. Curran fired over the last point of the half for the Rocks.

The second half was much more one sided. With the Rocks playing with a strong breeze they certainly made the most of this with scores coming at their ease. Midfielder Tom Sommers used the breeze to his advantage to hit over an audacious free out near the sideline.  Both Rocks wing forwards managed to open their accounts. Both scores were similar both coming from the wing  the first from Ryan Barden before Chris Kavanagh hit a carbon copy from the opposite side. Redmond then finished the game completely as a contest with two goals in quick succession. Firing the ball low into the net on both occasions. The aforementioned Pierce and Barden added to the score sheet, before Redmond hit two final dead balls over to finish off the scoring for the home side. Éire Óg hit one final consolation score from a free through Murphy again.

Barndarrig 2-8

Roundwood 1-6

Eoin Horkan

Avondale

As the saying goes goals win games this was certainly the case in Rathdrum last Friday

The opening couple of plays of the game were a sign of things to come with both sets of defences playing from the front from the word go. Eventually Roundwood opened the scoring through full forward Ger Byrne who won a hard ball out in front and swung the ball over the bar. Roundwood next score came through centre back Liam Gaffney who burst through the opposition defence to fire over the black spot from range.  Barndarrig responded in kind with three quick frees in succession through centre forward Michael Murphy. Scores were hard to come by in the opening half with both defences clearing ball any chance they got. This was proven when Roundwood wing back Gavin Fogarty drove out of the defence before he knew it he had fired a great score over the bar. Murphy added another free before Byrne split the posts yet again.  Barndarrig then started to pull away from their opposition with 3 scores the first from corner forward Jimmy Waldron before Murphy fired over from outside the D before Waldron added another from out near the sideline.  Fogarty burst up the field again to fire over his second of the game before corner forward Eamon Wolohan fired over the last score of the half leaving the minimum between the sides at the break.

The second half was a much tighter tenser affair with scores very much at a premium with defenders still been to the fore. Barndarrig then hit a sucker punch on the break with a ball been put in over the defence which resulted in a penalty which corner forward John Kinsella duly slotted into the corner of the net.  Waldron dissected the posts again to push the lead out for Barndarrig.  That man Fogarty was having a great game sweeping up any lose ball he then managed to get the ball near the half way line before slaloming and weaving his way through the defence and firing into the back of the net from just inside the 21 to make the game a contest again.  With the game in the melting pot the net score of the game proved to be the decisive one, with Barndarrig full forward Andrew Kavanagh finishing the game as a contest with a well taken goal.

Pearse’s Park

A fiery end to end  encounter from the opening whistle made this Junior B championship game one well worth watching

Baltinglass got off to a flying start straight from the throw in hitting an early score from play through wing forward Jack Fleming before midfielder Jamie McTiernan burst through from midfield before splitting the posts with a fine effort. Then a turning point came in the half when AGB corner back David Kenny was giving his marching orders with a second yellow card.  AGB hit their first score in anger through wing forward Jack D’Arcy who fired over after a great solo run through the opposition defence. The away side then hit over two quick fire dead balls through corner forward Jason Sinnott. The home side were kept in the game through that wing forward D’Arcy who hit two more scores from the play the 2nd been audacious attempt off his wrong side that dissected the post.  Baltinglass then hit a purple patch scoring 1-5 without reply.  Full forward Tony Keely hit the opening score of this with a point from play, before corner forward Conor Foley fired the ball over the black spot twice in quick succession the first coming from play before he fired over a dead ball. Keely slotted over another before Keely put the ball into the AGB net with a palmed finished from the edge of the square.  Wing back Chris Grimes won a ball from a kick out played a quick one two before firing over a long range score to finish off the half. Giving the away side a 9 point lead at the break.

Whatever was side to the home side at the break certainly worked. They came
out of the blocks very quickly with full forward Alan McBride starting the
scoring with a long range free, before the game completely turned with two
goals in quick succession the first coming after a great team move which was
finished to the net by Mark Fitzgerald. Arklow then won a penalty which was
nicely put away by Wing forward David O Neil.  Sub Ciaran O Reilly got his first
score of the game with a nice close in score, Baltinglass knew they had to
respond which they did first through Keely again from play before goalkeeper
Will Rogers made his way up the field to slot a long range free. D’Arcy got his
name on the score sheet again before sub Richie Neary fired over. With the
game now in the melting pot AGB went all out attack and managed to win a
free out near the sideline and after some indiscipline from Baltinglass the free
was moved right in near the goal which sub O Reily duly slotted to level the
match. With the game in its dying embers the aforementioned Keely got his
hands on the ball and made his way along the end line and fisted the ball over
the bar. AGB made one last burst to level the game the ball ended up in the
