Wicklow Camogie ARP vs Glenealy

Arklow Rocks Parnells 2-8

 Glenealy 4-10

 Pearse Park

 Eoin Horkan

A couple of early goals from Aoife Weir proved pivotal in Arklow on Sunday afternoon.

In what was a whirlwind start for Glenealy, Aoife Weir raised a green flag inside the opening three minutes. The hometown side had the gap back to one with strikes from Ciara Lancaster and Elizabeth Bourke. It looked like the Rocks had battled back but between the tenth- and twentieth-minute goals  from Weir and Vicky Coen along with a point from Maeve  Shorten had extended the lead. A point from Bourke in the middle of this had stemmed the tide slightly for her side. The final ten minutes belonged to Arklow as they piled on the pressure with two more Bourke efforts along with some great defending that kept them out of the net or so it looked. A long ball was eventually played in which was gathered and finished by Kelly Sommers. The half time whistle then came at the wrong time as the momentum had clearly swung in this tie even after an Ellie McCelland  effort had slightly stopped the purple patch.

The opening scores after the interval both came from dead balls with Coen first before Bourke cancelled it out. The next five minutes of the game belonged to Erynn O’Brien as she weaved her way through the defense to fire into the net before herself and Weir added more minors just before the halfway mark. It looked like the game was over but O’Brien’s goal was made redundant as Lancaster did the same at the far end.

In the final ten minutes the score was pushed out with Coen and Weir adding to their tallies in between an outrageous long-range effort through Ailbhe Dowling. The final consolation score came from the opposition as Bourke added a final free for her side.
