Supporters hoping for a lively contest between Claremorris and Drumkeeran were left disappointed on Sunday when their LGFA quarter-final was called off due to an unplayable pitch.
Concerns were first raised shortly after midday when the match referee inspected the Drumkeeran surface at around 12.15pm. Large patches of surface water and heavy scarring through the middle third were deemed unsafe, prompting a second assessment an hour later. Rather than improving, the pitch had deteriorated further.
Earlier in the day, the venue had hosted an U15 county final, and while that fixture proceeded, it clearly took its toll. By the time the senior teams arrived, the goalmouths in particular had become treacherously soft, making firm footing almost impossible.
With player safety in mind, officials opted to postpone the tie — a call that drew groans from travelling fans but was ultimately met with understanding. Neither side was willing to risk injuries in such conditions.
A new date for the fixture is expected to be confirmed shortly. Until then, both sets of players will return to training and wait patiently for another crack at progressing to the semi-finals.
