Mayo Intermidate Cill Chomain vs Kilmeena

Intermediate Championship

 Cill Chomain 1-12

 Kilmeena 1-21

 Crossmolina

 Eoin Horkan

A strong second half was enough to see Kilmeena come away with all two  points on Sunday in Crossmolina.

It was the All-Ireland junior winners from 2021 who got off to the better start in this midday tie as John McGlynn and Caolach Halligan fired them into a two point lead early on. Within five minutes there was controversy as a Justin Healy effort was waved wide by the umpire even though everyone on the bank side of Crossmolina believed it had gone inside the post. Just to pile more misery due to the sideline frustrations McGlynn added a second to his tally from a free. After this early set back David Walker was sprung from the bench and within five minutes he had fired over five points, a two pointer from a dead ball along with another orange flag from play. This was the end of the scoring for eight minutes even though Conor Kelly  and Jack Carney both had goal chances , but the post and Cian Gallagher kept them out. The lead was extended when Joe Curduff drove up from wing back to slot over. Just as it looked like the west Mayo side were in trouble, up stepped Kevin Ryder to fire over from outside the arc before McGlynn added another from play. The Gaeltacht’s side's final effort of the half was another dead ball from Walker who added two more to his tally. The final five minutes belonged to the opposition as Kelly, Jack Mulchrone and a McGlynn strike had them going in at the break one up.

The second half started with a bang as Healy managed to hit the back post  with a goal that was worth the admission fee alone. It was then the turn of the opposition led by Halligan and McGlynn to level the tie. It was then third time lucky for Kelly as he finally raised a green flag with a clever finish under the onrushing Gallagher. A Joe Mason effort stemmed the tide ever so slightly before sub Darragh Slattery along with Kelly and Colin Hastings had extended the gap just before the midway point of the half.

With the game heading into the final ten minutes a second long distance score from Ryder had widened the gap. It was the Healy’s Justin Matthew and Aaron, none of them related, who got the last three scores for their side. While  down the other end Mulchorne fired over from distance along with a double from O’ Donnell and a final effort from Slattery to ensure the victory.
