Mayo Senior Football Crossmolina vs Ballina

Ballina 4-10

Crossmolina 3-20

St Tiernach’s Park Crossmolina

Eoin Horkan

Anyone in attendance at St Tiernach’s park on Sunday

afternoon witnessed one of the finest games of football in the

Mayo club championship in recent times. It was the home side

that managed to come away with the bragging rights winning by

seven points.

In what was a rip roaring encounter from the throw-in Evan

Regan set the tone early using the wing to his advantage to slot

over a two point effort. The game was level within two minutes

as Oisin Deane and Patrick Leddy had opened their account for

the day. With the aid of the breeze Regan restored the lead.

The home side then took control as they moved Leddy out to

the middle of the park. A David Clarke save from Conor Loftus

resulted in a forty-five which Kobe McDonald fired over. This

was the start of a purple patch as Jordan Flynn, James

Maheady and Leddy raised white flags inside the opening ten

minutes. The opposition started to battle back, led by Mayo

seniors Sam Callinan and Frank Irwin. These were cancelled

out by Maheady before the first major of the game. A long ball

landed into the lap of Mikey Murray who played a number of

passes before palming it into the net from close range. With ten

left of the clock McDonald who was playing inside doubled his

tally.Just as it looked like the home side were in control Dylan

Thornton fired a pass into Ciaran Treacy who slotted into the

net. It was the Deel who finished stronger with McDonald

raising an orange flag before Dylan Flynn ensured the sides

would go in level at the break.

After the interval the side in maroon nearly goaled but

McDonald's solo effort came back off the post as Clarke was

beaten. The Stephenites pulled away early in the half as Irwin

slotted a dead ball before Treacy was fed by Regan to slot into

the far corner of the net. The home side's half forward line all

managed to score inside five minutes with Deane, Flynn and

Niall Coggins had the gap back to one ten minutes into the half.

With the aid of the breeze it was the aforementioned McDonald

who slotted a second two pointer this one from a dead ball to

give his side the lead again. Both sides were having mini

periods of dominance as Regan added three more to his tally

before his free kick from out wide caused carnage in the

defence, before Dylan Thornton ensured it went into the back of

the net.

The last ten minutes of this round two game belonged to the

home team as they pushed for home with Flynn powering

forward to fire over.

The first of the home side's green flags came from Niall

Coggins before the same man assisted full back Kevin Mulhern

to slot past Clarke. An Irwin effort stemmed the flow slightly.

The final seven minutes of the game ensured victory for the

after sub Sean Regan was black carded for Ballina. With the

aid of the extra man efforts from Maheady, Flynn and Leddy in

between a goal from the classy Conor Loftus assisted again by

that man Coggins. In the final play of the game the home side

ended with fourteen as Jordan Flynn was given his second

yellow as he stopped the opposition getting near the goal.
