The
Academy opened up their Galway Cup account with a two goal victory against
their Limerick counterparts.
After
having to wait a full day before they started their competition the Academy
side got off to a great start when Harvey Walsh found the back of the net early
on. The town side kept the pressure on attacking at will and controlling the
tie especially around the middle of the park. They eventually made sure of the
victory when striker Dara Fox doubled
the lead for his side.

In
their second game of the day tiredness
hit the Academy side as their opponents managed to win out winners by six
goals.
The
team that went on to win the cup in this group showed there class against a
tired academy side Wednesday evening .A goal from Ciaran Collins was a great
sign that even against all odds that this Academy side would fight till the
bitter end even when they hadn’t many chances in the game.

It
was Roscommon who got the better of this midlands derby by the odd goal in
three on Thursday evening.
This
Athlone Academy side started this game very much on the front foot and
eventually managed to take the lead when striker Dara Fox struck an effort past
the opposition goalkeeper. They kept the pressure on but their opponents
managed to hold strong defensively for the rest of the group game.
Their
neighbors managed to break through twice before the end of the tie when Matthew
Coyne and Eli Kilamrtin won the game for the Roscommon side.
This
result did not reflect the dominance that Athlone has at periods in this game.

It
wasn't to be for the academy side as they eventually got beaten by a penalty
against their Munster opponents.
What
a game this was in the semi final as both sides went on the attack from the
word go. The Academy side netted through that man again Dara Fox along with
efforts from Kevin Timlin and Tom Quinn. Clare were threatening every time they
went forward also as they managed to level the semi final.
This
meant this tie would be decided with a penalty shootout.

A
Cian Gallagher hat trick was the difference in this Connacht derby on Saturday
in Galway.
The
Academy side started brighter when Cian Gallagher broke down the wing before
rounding the goalkeeper to open the scoring. Within a couple of minutes, the
tie was leveled when a Daniel Maye free kick found its way into the net from
twenty-five yards. As the half went on
both sides created chances eventually it was Athlone who took the lead on the
cusp of half time when Dara Fox broke away and his effort was deflected into
the net.
After
the resumption it was the Academy who extended their lead when Gallagher netted
from outside the box after a sustained period of pressure This didn't seem to phase the opposition as they kept battling away and eventually narrowed the gap when
Michael Kelly found himself in the right place at the right time.
With
the last strike of the game Cian Gallagher completed his hat trick with a great
strike from long range.
Athlone
manager Brian McCarthy spoke to us after the final whistle, he believes the
tournament “ has been a really good experience for his side as this would have
been a lot of teams experience on an eleven a side pitch .” McCrathy hopes that
they can “ learn from this experience and bring it forward into the upcoming
season for the Academy.”
