DLR Waves vs Galway WFC Report

 

Kate Mooney and Katie Malone both netted for the hosts as DLR Waves picked up their first win of their 2021 WNL campaign, with a 2-1 victory over a previously unbeaten Galway WFC at the UCD Bowl.

A Rachel Kearns goal levelled the game before the interval, and the sides remained tied at 1-all entering the closing minutes.

Waves found the net for the second time on 88 minutes, after a mistake by the Galway keeper ensured Malone tapped the ball into a vacant goal.

Galway heaped pressure on late on, but Eve Badana and the DLR defence held strong to claim their first victory.

Both sides flew out of the blocks playing the game at what was a very high tempo. This led to a scrappy opening 10 minutes with no team making any inroads into the opposition box.

On the 15th minute the home side opened the scoring through Mooney, who got her head onto a long ball played down the field. She controlled her header well to find the corner of the opposition net.

This goal propelled the visitors into action. They started to gain a foothold in the middle of the park through Kiera Cormican. As Galway pushed forward, the Graham Kelly well trained defensive unit stood firm, not allowing any shots to trouble Eve Badana in the goal.

With the game heading towards the break goal scorer and debutant Mooney suffered a leg injury which meant her debut for her new club had to be cut short. She was replaced up front by Katie Malone.

Neither team had a shot on goal for the rest of the half as both defences were tenacious against any threat.

The second half was much like the start of the opening one with some very scrappy play from both clubs.

Billy Clery’s side won an indirect free kick due to the pressure Kearns put on Badana who couldn’t get rid of the ball quickly.

Both sides traded half chances which ended up wide of the goals. The away side won a free near the end line. Substitute Aoife Thompson whipped a great ball into the Waves box. Kearns read the flight of the ball perfectly. Her bullet header flew into Eve Badana net to level the tie.

Kelly started to empty the bench to try and change the outcome of the match. The final whistle was within touching distance when DLR fired a ball into the Galway box. After a mistake from the keeper Malone tapped into an empty net to give the hosts the lead, arguably against the run of play.

Galway piled on the pressure till the end but Badana and the Waves defence help out for a win.

DLR Waves vs Galway Preview

 

DLR welcome high-flying Galway to Belfield this evening at 6pm aiming for their first victory of the season.

The Dublin side sit fifth in the table after the opening two rounds of games in the league. In comparison the Westerners lie second, two points adrift of the top spot and high-flying Shelbourne.

Galway will be traveling East on a high after scoring three goals in their last game, against another Dublin side Bohemians. The only dampener on what was a great result for them was the sending off late on of the very influential Chloe Singleton.

The DLR defensive unit will have to be in great form to keep out this Galway side, who just go out and attack from the opening whistle. Ex-Irish underage international Rachel Kearns has been influential for Galway in pressing from the front. She is now starting to find her feet in the league and could very easily end up being the top scorer in the division. 

Clery’s side will be looking for the experienced Therese Kinnevey along side Savannah McCarthy to control the middle of the park and distribute the ball to Kearns along with McKey; both of whom got their names on the scoresheet in their last game.

The home side will be looking to goal scorer from the last game Carla McManus to add to her tally for the season. If she can get any supply, it will be very difficult for the away sides back line to keep that ball out of the net.

Whether Graham Kelly will make any tactical changes to his side is yet to be seen. As the home side they will need to go out and attack this game. This could be very difficult for the young side.

A counter attacking game could be the plan of action for the home side. Kerri Letmon will be looking to open her scoring for the season. If herself and the aforementioned McManus have their shooting boots on, we could be in for a very entertaining and high scoring game.

Treaty United vs Cobh Preview

 

New boys Treaty United are aiming to continue their unbeaten debut season this Friday, when they host a Cobh Ramblers side chasing their first league point.

The Limerick side sit 4th in the table after two games; but their Munster counterparts are rooted to the bottom after two big losses. The first of those defeats came against Rebel County colleagues Cork City, before the Dublin students hit them for 4 goals in their last game.

Stuart Ashton side, who finished 6th in this league last season will be hopeful that their experience might show in Limerick as they attempt to get their first points of the season.

Due to Covid, a lot of teams have had huge issues in recruiting because of financial issues. Cobh’s recruitment has mainly been localised, picking up players from around Cork who have experience in the Munster Senior League.

David O'Leary (Avondale United), Ciaran Griffin (Cobh Wanderers), Caelian Rooney (Youghal United), Jake Hegarty and James McCarthy (Middleton) have all been added to the squad.

Stuart Ashton will be hoping that one or two of these players might come to the fore to help star man Charlie Lyons get a result on the night.

Tommy Barrett’s side are yet to concede a goal in the competition, albeit they have gone down to 10-men in their opening two games.

Treaty’s backline is well marshalled by last week’s game winner Anthony O’ Donnell; along with versatile club captain Jack Lynch. It will be very difficult to see how Cobh will break through this resolute rear-guard especially with them on home turf.

With exciting talent like Joel Coulstrain and Conor Melody in attack Friday could be the night that these players will show their skill and finishing ability and finally open their account for the club.

If the Shannonsiders can finish the game with 11 men, it will be very difficult to see anything but a win for this fledgling new club.

Drogheda vs Finn Harps Report

 

HARPS PEGGED BACK BY DROGS

Finn Harps kept their unbeaten start to the season going with a hard fought 1-1 draw with Drogheda United at Head in the Game Park this evening in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

Ollie Horgan’s side travelled to the Wee county to keep there early run of form going. Horgan named an unchanged side in comparison to Drogheda who made a few changes along with changing their formation for the visit of Harps.

The early stages of the game were very nip and tuck with both sides cancelling each other out for the opening 25 minutes.

It wasn’t until just before the half hour mark that the game burst into life. When in form Adam Foley gathered the ball at the edge of the box turned and fired a shot that was well saved by the goalkeeper.

The home side’s first chance came moments later when Mark Doyle collected the ball and ran directly at the defence but his low effort from inside the box was well saved by McGinley in the goal.

The last chance of the half came to the away side when Ethan Boyle got the ball on the edge of the box, but his attempted lob flew over the bar.

The 2nd half of the game was a much brighter affair. Mark Russell fired a shot in anger from long range that was tipped over the bar by the keeper.

The first goal of the game was a goal worth waiting for, Karl O’ Sullivan hit a strike from outside the box which flew into the corner giving the keeper no chance.

5 minutes later the home side grabbed the equaliser after James Browne danced his way through the defence , before laying the ball to Mark Doyle who tapped into an empty net.

Both managers started emptying the bench after the hour mark. Trying to liven up the closing stages.

Browne made his way from out wide into the box again in the 80th minute but after doing all the hard work McGinley saved his goal bound effort.

In the closing stages the home side piled on the pressure. If it wasn’t for a great interception by Shane McEleney, as Dinny Corcoran was waiting to tap into an empty net.

Treaty United vs Wexford Report

 

TREATY TAKE THE SPOILS ON HOME DEBUT

Treaty United created their one little piece of history with a Anthony O'Donnell header enough to give them a 1-0 victory over Wexford FC in their first ever home game despite playing the last 30 minutes with 10 men.

It was the opposition that controlled the game better in the opening period of play. They created the first chance when a through ball landed at the feet of Jack Doherty whose controlled effort was well saved by Shane Cusack.

Wexford kept on the pressure, this lead to the second chance of the game through defender Luke Turner whose goal bound header was easily saved by Cusack.

In the 28th minute Treaty took the lead when defender Anthony O’Donnell got his head onto a great free kick whipped in by Mark Ludden. This was the home sides first ever goal in senior football.

Both sides cancelled each other out for the next 10 minutes with the defenders on both sides clearing any ball that came near either box.

Wexford won a corner with the game heading towards the break. They attempted a training ground move and it would have come off if it wasn’t for Ludden being alert clearing the ball at the back post. The home side had the last chance of the half though Joel Coustrain whose shot from the edge of the box went narrowly passed the post.

The 2nd half of this game was a much tighter affair. With chances few and far between. The home side had the best chance with a header that went past the far post.

The game changed dramatically just after the hour mark when Treaty’s Clyde O’Connell was given a 2nd yellow card in the space of 5 minutes.

This meant that the Shannonsiders would be on the backfoot for the last 25 minutes of the game. As the south east side started to control the game, they tried absolutely everything to break down a solid back line.

The back line cleared every ball that went near the box with O’Donnell and captain Jack Lynch coming out on top in every battle.

History was made at the final whistle when the home side held on for the win.

Treaty United vs Wexford Fc preview

 History will be made on Friday night in the Markets Fields in Limerick when Treaty United host Wexford FC in their first every home game in the League of Ireland First Division.

Having opened there maiden league campaign last weekend in the east of the country against Bray. The midwestern side managed to come away from that game with a solitary point, even after they got a man sent off in the game.

Brian O Sullivan’s Wexford side will be looking for a different result after they lost their first game of the season away to Cabinteely.

This trip to Limerick will be extremely tough as Treaty are very strong in defence, this was very evident from Barrett’s side last weekend against Bray especially when they held a dangerous side scoreless after being reduced to 10 men.

Wexford will have two key men returning from injures that affected both players pre-season with the club. If Dan Tobin and Charlie Smith are going to be available for O'Sullivan’s side on Friday night. It will be a timely return to fitness.

Unfortunately Wexford’s two new signings Anto Dolan and Cameron Smith still remain unavailable due to the long term injuries they have picked up. Barrett’s young side are relatively inexperienced at this level. With a squad made of mainly Limerick and Clare based amateur players. Barrett will be looking for the players with League of Ireland experience under their belt to try and gain a historic victory for the club.

This game will be available to watch on LOITV for anyone that has an interest in soccer in the Midwest or the south east or anyone who want to witness a little bit of League of Ireland history in the making.

Bohemians vs Longfrord report

 

LONGFORD COMPLETE LATE COMEBACK IN DALYMOUNT

Supersub Conor Davis found the back of James Talbot's net twice in the final stages of the game to pull Longford Town from 2-0 down to take a share of the spoils at Dalymount against a Bohs side who will be frustrated at their opening to the season.

Keith Long and Daire Doyle both made one change each from their teams from last week’s games. Keith Ward coming in for the home side and Sam Verdon coming in for Longford.

Bohs first shot in anger came through Ross Tierney whose long-range effort flew wide of the post. After a period of scrappy play from both sides, Georgie Kelly showed great composure in the box controlling a Liam Burt cross, before turning and firing into the bottom corner.

The home side would have doubled their lead moments later if it were not for a fine double save from former player Lee Stacey, first denying Tierney, before getting up quickly and denying Burt on the rebound.

It was third time lucky for Tierney in the 25th minute as his controlled volley from the edge of the box nestled in the corner of the net to double the home sides lead.

With the game heading towards the break most sides missed great chances. Longford’s Joe Gorman missed a header from a corner before Kelly was denied again by Stacey.

The second half was a much cagier affair. With the home side playing against the breeze. Longford tired to control the game much more but try as they might they couldn’t break through the home sides defence.

Bohs were dangerous on the break with the aforementioned Kelly glancing a header wide from a corner, before firing a curling show against the post. Daire Doyle started to empty the bench midway through the half. With 15 minutes left on the clock sub Conor Davis got the ball on the edge of the box, he danced his way through the home sides defence before slotting into the far corner.

With the game in it's dying stages Doyle’s side pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Super sub-Davis completed the comeback with a finish from a narrow angle at the back post.

Bohemians will be very disappointed with themselves only earning 1 point from a possible 6 in their opening two games of the season

Bohemians vs Longford Preview

 

Longford Town are the visitors to Dalymount Park to face Bohemians on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the League of Ireland Premier Division on Saturday at 4pm.

Daire Doyle won't be getting carried away by his side's top of the table league position at the first round of games but will be hoping to recreate the performance from that victory over Derry City when they face Bohs today.

The Phibsboro side will themselves be looking for a response after a disappointing defeat in Finn Park last weekend. Keith Long will be looking for a more cohesive performance from his side after they failed to break down a resolute defensive display from Finn Harps.

Longford will hope players like Aodh Devlin and Dylan Grimes will control the midfield to give their potent forward line the opportunity they find the back of the net.

Bohs will be looking to reverse there result from last weekend, they paid the price last week against Harps where Long made the decision to only play one striker up front. Supporters of the Phibsboro side will want to see a more attacking threat from their side at home whether this means a change of formation or just trying to control the game in the middle of the park in comparison to the 2 that Longford played in the middle last week. 

The home sides experience challenging at the top of the table in recent seasons, coupled with home advantage might be just enough to swing the game in Bohs favour but Longford will be eager to build on their fine start to the season.

World U20 Lacrosse Championships scheduled for UL postponed until 2022

 THE Ireland CEO Lacrosse has stated he was a 'bit relieved' after the World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championships due to take place in the University of Limerick (UL) next year were postponed until 2022.

Michael Kennedy believes this is the correct decision with the Irish team unable to train together due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“This time of the year the team should be training together, preparing to compete. We are not able to train together at the moment because of lockdown.”

If the competition had gone ahead this summer, Kennedy believed some countries would suffer more due to not having adequate time to train.

“There would have always been that asterisk, well you know the teams wouldn’t have the same amount of time as they would normally have to prepare.”

He explained how there was relief that if the Covid-19 vaccines work it could allow supporters and people to come to the games in a safe environment.

“We could have run the event with really stringent COVID-19 protocols.

“With so much uncertainty around the virus pushing it out a further year, especially what is happening with the vaccine, it is going to bring a lot more certainty and give the teams and the players the right amount of time to prepare for a World Championships.”

“The whole point of hosting the event in UL is to showcase the sport of Lacrosse to people in Limerick and throughout Ireland.”

The Ireland Lacrosse CEO hopes these games will still take place in UL in 2022.

“I absolutely do not want to change the venue, I have the highest regard for UL and David Ward in particular, he has been fantastic to work with. I have absolutely no intention of having the games anywhere but Limerick.”

Munster vs Harlequins

 

Munster grind out important victory

Munster secured a 21-7 victory over Harlequins in what proved to be a tough battle in Thomond Park.

Despite not being at their free floing best Munster came out on top against an ill-disciplined Harlequins side. Johann Van Graan’s men will need to produce an improved display away to Clermont next Saturday.

After a cagy opening 10 minutes Munster won a penalty just outside the 22, which JJ Hanrahan duly slotted over to open the scoring.

Harlequins struggled to convert their opportunities, missing two penalties as they also saw a try disallowed just after for a forward pass in the build-up.

James Cronin won a penalty against the run of play for Munster which Hanrahan converted to extend the home sides lead.

Directly from the kick-off Tadhg Beirne broke through the Quins defence. This led to Quins flanker James Chisholm receiving a yellow card for a cynical foul to stop the play. Hanrahan missed the extras just before the break.

The home side levelled up the number of players on the pitch early in the second half when Danny Care took a quick penalty, Stephen Archer stopped him illegally and received a yellow card in the process.

Just after Quins got 15 back on the pitch, they conceded the first try of the game. The home side kicked a penalty into touch and after the maul was illegally brought down referee Pascal Gauzere awarded a penalty try and yellow carded Will Evans from Quins.

Quins finally managed to get on the scoreboard through winger Cadan Murley who managed to break a tackle on the wing and touch the ball down. Smith added the extra two.

With the game in the final quarter Quins captain Alex Dombrandt hit Munster fly half Ben Healy late which he got a yellow card for. Healy knocked over the penalty from well inside his own half.

The home side made the extra man count as they scored their second try with Gavin Coombes crossing the whitewash on his debut for his seventh try in eight games. Healy missed the extras as Munster secured an opening round victory.

Irish Lacrosse CEO relieved after postponement of World Championships

The Ireland CEO Lacrosse has stated he was a “bit relieved” after the World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championships due to take place in the University of Limerick (UL) next year were postponed until 2022.

World Lacrosse games Postponed

 

Blow for Limerick with World Lacrosse Championships pushed back

The World Lacrosse Men’s U20 World Championships, which were due to take place at the University of Limerick (UL) next year have been postponed until 2022.

The decision is a blow for the Castletroy based college and for Limerick with the potential for visitors to the city which would lead to additional revenue.

After COVID-19 caused disruption for much of the hospitality sector, this will be disappointing news for the local economy.

A statement on the World Lacrosse website says: “The World Lacrosse Men’s U20 World Championship is also being postponed from 2021 to 2022. It is expected the event will still be held in Limerick, Ireland at the University of Limerick. The dates for the rescheduled event are to be confirmed, but likely will be late July / early August 2022.”

“In making the decision, the World Lacrosse Board of Directors examined the continued impact, uncertainty and disruption to preparations for these events brought about by the global pandemic, along with input provided by its member-National Governing Bodies and participating teams regarding athlete health and safety, team training, travel and other logistical considerations.

“These are extremely difficult decisions, particularly given the need to provide our members with as much advance notice as possible whilst managing the risk and uncertainty brought about by the pandemic.”

Louise Cantilon All Ireland Hurling Piece

 Louise Cantillon talks new radio show and Limerick’s chances of winning the All-Ireland final.

If Louise Cantillon was not busy enough with writing a weekly column for The Limerick Leader and presenting with Spin South West, she has recently started co-hosting a radio show with former Limerick hurler Shane Dowling.

They christened the show ‘A Different Ball Game’, with the show taking place every Friday night on Classic Hits FM from 6.30-7pm.

It is very unusual to have a sports show on this station due to the fact it is for all intents and purposes a music station.

The show began when it was announced that the GAA Championship was going to be played during the lockdown.

This was going to make the championship even more historic if it was not going to be anyway with the delayed start to this year’s competition co-inciding with the 100-year anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Louise and Shane’s new show airs every Friday

Herself and Shane have been friends for many years so with Louise’s knowledge of radio and Shane’s experience at competing at the highest level, it was an ideal opportunity to create a show.

Louise said: “We have been friends since we were in the same year in school.”

“Shane has a great character and a great personality and had already dabbled a little bit in media. I needed someone to be a voice of experience.”

“We just have a bit of craic and talk about what could happen in the GAA each weekend.”

Each week the pair host live chats with inter county players themselves which provides an opportunity to hear about how they are coping with the ‘new normal.’

The show has now got over 80,000 listeners since the first episode on October 30^th.

Louise’s partner Declan Hannon is captain of the Limerick team as he aims to climb the steps of the Hogan Stand and lift the Liam McCarthy for the second time in three years.

“He is feeling good sure look they have put a merciful amount of work into everything. I admire every single man on that team and on every county team who have been training during this time.”

“The lads are out in the freezing cold November training in the dark nights on the pitches.”

The intercounty scene is not as glamorous as made out to be especially during the cold winter months.

Louise says Limerick “have a great chance” in this Sunday’s eagerly anticipated All-Ireland final against Waterford.

 “The lads worked so hard that that they are a credit to themselves. They are the type of team that will go out and fight until the bitter end.”

Any side that fights in the way described will stand a great chance of winning the final.

“I reckon they will go out and they will fight for it because it’s an All-Ireland and they know what’s at stake.”

“I have no doubt it will be a tight game, but obviously I hope Limerick will come out on top in the end.”

Tries either side of half time gave Ireland the platform to come out on top against Scotland as Andy Farrell’s men secured third place in the Autumn Nations Cup.

After a patchy opening half display Ireland’s power game proved too much for Scotland to handle in a performance that summed up Ireland’ 2020: inconsistent.

Farrell can take positives from the way Ireland responded from trailing 9-3 to take control of the game thereafter.

Scotland got the opening score of the game against the run of play with a penalty from fly half Jaco Van Der Walt.

The away side extended their lead with another penalty after Ireland were penalised at the scrum. Johnny Sexton narrowed the gap for the home side with a long-range penalty.

Van Der Walt extended Scotland’s advantage from a penalty before Duncan Taylor was sin-binned for a deliberate knock in with Ireland inching closer to the Scottish try line.

Sexton added the penalty which was a reward for some great Irish play. Ireland managed to make the extra man count with a try from Keith Earls after some quick thinking from Robbie Henshaw. Earls’ try moved hi msecond on the list of all time leading try scorers for the men in green as he surpassed Tommy Bowe’s tally of 31. Sexton missed the conversion as Ireland led by two points at half time.

Ireland flew out of the blocks after the break with Cian Healy crossing the whitewash after Caelan Doris was held up just short. Sexton added the extras for the home side.

Keith Earls crossed the try line minutes later after a great hands from Peter O Mahony. Sexton nailed the touchline conversion.

The away side replied with a try from winger, Duhan van der Merwe after a period of pressure, Van Der Walt slotted the extras.

Ross Byrne came off the bench to replace Sexton, with his first kick of the game he added another three points with a penalty.

Byrne added a second penalty after Scotland’s defence was penalised after 20 phases of play to ensure there would be no comeback by Gregor Townsend’s side as Ireland secured third place in the Autumn Nations Cup.

Glasgow vs Munster

 

Munster maintain perfect start as they secure bonus point win

Munster struck late to seal a bonus point win away in Scotland as they made it six wins out of as many games in the Pro14.

Johann Van Graan’s men hit the ground running with an early try from Billy Holland, with Healy adding the conversion.

From the resulting kick off, the home side won possession back and went on the attack, with the ball eventually ending up in Glenn Bryce’s hand who crossed for the Scottish side with the conversion was missed.

Brandon Thomson landed a monster penalty from the halfway line moments later to give the home side the lead.

It was almost like deja vu in the 31^st minute. Munster had a lineout 5 metres from the try line. They mauled the ball over the line with Fineen Wycherley crossing the whitewash. Healy missed the subsequent conversion.

The away side notched the opening points of the second half through Ben Healy with a long-range penalty.

After a sustained period of pressure by Glasgow close to the Munster line they eventually managed to cross with Grant Stewart notching the score after sustained pressure. Thomson missed the conversion.

During this period Munster captain Billy Holland was sin-binned for continuous infringements close to the line.

Munster’s Gavin Coombes managed to get over the line for the second time in as many games after Munster went through the phases. Glasgow captain Wilson had also been given a yellow card in the lead up to the try. Healy then landed the extra two points.

Munster managed to get a bonus point try right at the end of the game from another rolling maul. Jean Kleyn eventually came off the side of to drop over the line to end the game as a contest. Hanrahan missed the extras but it mattered not as Munster picked up another impressive victory.
