A
John Toomey goal was ultimately the difference in this round five derby played
in sunny Ashford on Saturday evening.
It
was Laragh who started the brighter in this tie when Eric Olohan fired over
inside two minutes. The Glendalough side kept the pressure on in the first five
minutes but couldn't manage to extend the gap. The opposition leveled the game
when James Murphy slotted over a dead ball before the returning Paddy Byrne
gave his side the lead with an effort from play. Inside ten minutes of the
first half Olohan had leveled the game as both sides were clinical up front. It
was Ballinacor who started to gain control of this game when Murphy along with
Conor Parsons and Ger Byrne extended the gap in between a free from that man
Olohan who was keeping his side in it. The gap was narrowed to one when Laragh
midfielder John Nolan drove up the pitch with twelve minutes left in the half.
It was all the opposition after this as P Byrne, G Byrne and two efforts from
John Toomey solidified their sides lead even after Jamie Nolan had received a
black card. Not to be outdone, Olohan narrowed the gap just on the half time
whistle.
Leaving four points between the sides at the
interval.
Once
the game resumed Nolan and Olohan had narrowed the gap down as Murphy stopped
the Laragh momentum with a classy strike from play. Just as it looked like the
game was swinging back in Laragh’s favor they were reduced to fourteen men when
center back Cian McHugh dragged down Ger Byrne as he was going through on goal.
Murphy converted the resulting free. From the kick out Christopher Murphy
gathered the ball and fed it to John Toomey who found the back of the net. With
the aid of an extra man the Carriglinneen side added two more scores first from
G Byrne before Toomey finished his scoring for the day. With eight minutes left
the tie looked over but the side in green and gold had other ideas. With two
scores from Olohan along with a Mark Cullen effort it looked like they could
get closer. The gap was then narrowed when cornerback Gavin Cullen burst up the
field with a minute left on the clock to rattle the back of the net. This was
the closest they got as a G Byrne free ensured victory for his side.
This
leaves Laragh in the dreaded relegation against Kilcoole.
