Who ever said there was no football in Kilkenny! It was Callans’s day in Wicklow as they won the south Leinster title by a solitary point last Thursday.

After a delayed start to this  match the visitors to Pearse park didn’t let this stop them as they flew out of the blocks. It was clear that the wind would play a big part in this game and that was the case as Callan played long balls in the early phases of the game reaping the rewards as corner forward Robbie Jackman and midfielder Tim Doherty raised the opening white flags of the game. It was the turn of   Paul Hanrahan who gathered a long ball before firing into the back of the net as Callan looked in control. Charlie Meirtneach  narrowed the gap with a cultured effort from outside the exclusion zone.

This small reprieve didn’t stop the Kilkenny men as they went on to fire over the next four scores with two coming from the boot of dangerous inside man Noah Cahill, before Hanrahan added to his tally. The final score of this onslaught came from wing forward Ned O’ Meara who drove forward with the aid of the breeze. With eight  minutes to go in the half Cian Ó Broin narrowed the gap again. Callans last two scores of the half came from Jackman from play before the aforementioned Cahill slotted a forty five in between a fine left footed effort from Fenn Ó hUallacháin , leaving eight points between the sides at the interval.

With the breeze against them in the second half it was Callan who made light work of this as the aforementioned Cahill drove a high ball towards the post that landed into the back of the net to give his side a huge advantage to hold on too.

The second half turned into a carbon copy of the first after that early goal as the home side pushed forwards at every opportunity with Meirtneach and Ó  hUallacháin narrowing the gap in between an effort from substitute Aaron Mac Aodha. With GCM slowly turning the screw it was clear that this game was far from over , after a goal mouth scramble the ball ended up in the Kilkenny net  off the hands of goalie Zac Evans.  The Arklow side were making positional changes and one of these paid off as Seosamh O’ Caoindealbháin  moved forward to split the posts before Kyle Mac na Mhuillin drove over a forty five. With minutes to go in the tie and the game there for the taking Ó  hUallacháin drove another effort over from play. The final score of the game came from the boot of Brian Mac Cathmhaoil. This come back wasn’t enough as Callan held on for victory.

Wexford couldn’t make much of there early control of the game as the Mayo defence stood strong any time they made inroads into the final third .Mayo’s first half chance of the game came from a long high ball which caused consternation in the Wexford defence as the ball was heading towards the goal Bea Clancy managed to get back into her goal before clearing the danger.

Both sides were finding it difficult to trouble either goal up until halfway through the half when Wexford fashioned a corner which landed  at the feet of Farrin Wolohan whose goal bound effort went over the crossbar. The home side kept pilling on the pressure as the half went on. It was against the run of play that the deadlock was broken as Isobel Phillips  broke down the wing after a quick free kick  before firing in a  sumptuous cross in the box which was diverted into her own net by Caoimhe Carley. Leaving the away side a goal up at the interval.

After the break Mayo started to control possession in the middle as Kayla Doherty along with Muireann Nolan managed to gain a foothold. It was this control that resulted in a  Doherty effort that was saved by Clancy. Wexford almost levelled  the tie fifteen minutes into the half as Lucia Donohue broke through the Mayo rear-guard  as she was about to pull the trigger and level the tie Isobel Phillips expertly disposed her and came away with the ball. In the next attack Wolohan controlled a ball from a corner but her angled effort flew wide of the far post. The home sides created another guilt edge chance as Walsh broke through again, but as Heffernan advanced from her goal line the pressure paid off as Walsh’s effort narrowly missed the top of the net.

This was the last  goal bound effort in the tie as the westerners held firm. The final ten minutes of the game were expertly managed by the away side. With minutes left in the tie a corner was floated to the edge of the box, the ball ended up with Emily Jennings but her well timed volley flew back of the crossbar.

It was Mayo’s day down in the sunny southeast as an early first half goal was enough to see them into an All-Ireland final against either Kerry or near neighbours Leitrim/ Sligo in May.

It was the home side who carved out the opening chance inside the opening five minutes when Izzy Walsh collected the ball on the edge of the Mayo box before dragging her effort wide of the upright. Wexford couldn’t make much of there early control of the game as the Mayo defence stood strong any time they made inroads into the final third of the pitch. Mayo’s first half chance of the game came from a long high ball which caused consternation in the Wexford defence as the ball was heading towards the goal Bea Clancy managed to get back into her goal before clearing the danger.

Both sides were finding it difficult to trouble either goal up until halfway through the half when Wexford manufactured a corner which resulted in the ball landing at the feet of Farrin Wolohan who fired over with the goal at her mercy. The home side kept pilling on the pressure as the half went on. It was against the run of play that the deadlock was broken as Isobel Phillips  broke down the wing after a quick free kick  before firing in a dangerous cross in the box which was diverted into her own net by Caoimhe Carley. The half finished off with neither side creating any chances of note as midfielders Layla Stafford and Kayla Doherty battled to gain control of the tie.

After the interval it was Mayo who started to control the tie more as Doherty along with Muireann Nolan managed to gain a foothold in the middle of the park. It was this control that resulted in an effort from Doherty that was saved by Clancy early in the half. Wexford nearly managed to level the tie fifteen minutes into the half as Lucia Donohue broke through the Mayo rear-guard even rounding the goalie but as she was about to put the ball into the empty  net Isobel Phillips managed to  track back on her blind side before disposing her with a perfectly timed challenge In the next attack Wolohan controlled a ball expertly from a corner but her angled effort flew wide of the far post. The home sides onslaught of the Mayo goal continued as Walsh broke through again, this time her controlled effort as the substitute Heffernan advanced of the line narrowly flew over the bar.

This was the last time in this tie that the home side managed to trouble the westerner’s goal. The final ten minutes of the game were expertly managed by the away side. With minutes left in the tie a corner was floated to the edge of the box, the ball ended up landing at Emily Jennings  feet but her well controlled volley flew back of the crossbar.

After the final whistle we got the thoughts of Mayo mangers  Ryan Merchant and Sinead Mulhern.

Merchant believes “ It was an excellent game  in sunny conditions.” He goes on to note  that Mayo “ didn’t play too well in the first half and that the girls were very nervous. He explained  how “ they settled into it in the second half and outplayed Wexford and fully deserved their win.”

Looking ahead to the final Mulhern added “ they need to keep progressing at training .. and prevent injuries especially with so many girls playing Gaelic Football for the county.”
